Blossom and Jetsam

Blossom and Jetsam is an independent photographic project by Ryan and Janelle Alderson that seeks beauty and meaning in the wreckage of modern, everyday life.

It’s a kintsugi project: the flowers growing through the rubble, the light shining through the cracks.

Photography and image-making is fascinating to us on so many levels. A photograph is not reality but a re-presentation of it. Like the dancing shadows of Plato’s cave, images and icons hint of a light from beyond themselves and without which they wouldn’t exist.

Process

Our photographic process is as manual as possible. While not opposed to technology as another tool, we like the hands-on experience of building cameras, exposing film, and creating prints in a darkroom. This forces us to slow down and encourages contemplation as opposed to endlessly scrolling. We hope this work can be an antidote to dopamine culture and bring something real into focus.

We intend to present our art as tangible artifacts: small, limited editions of handmade books and prints.
